John Florio is best known to the present day for his great
translation of Montaigne's Essays. To his contemporaries he was one
of the most conspicuous figures of the literary and social cliques
of the time. By her reconstruction of Florio's life and character,
Frances Yates' 1934 text throws light upon the vexed question of
his relations with Shakespeare.
This unique and brilliant book is a history of human knowledge.
Before the invention of printing, a trained memory was of vital
importance. Based on a technique of impressing 'places' and
'images' on the mind, the ancient Greeks created an elaborate
memory system which in turn was inherited by the Romans and passed
into the European tradition, to be revived, in occult form, during
the Renaissance. Frances Yates sheds light on Dante's Divine
Comedy, the form of the Shakespearian theatre and the history of
ancient architecture; The Art of Memory is an invaluable
contribution to aesthetics and psychology, and to the history of
philosophy, of science and of literature.
In the early seventeenth century, a new movement was proclaimed throughout Europe, announcing the universal reform of religion, science, art, and society. The main proponents of this movement were the esoteric "Rosicrucians". Europe was a world in transition and Rosicrucianism was but the latest movement to capture the public imagination. Concerned with spiritual illumination and intellectual knowledge the movement continued to have widespread influence long after it was supposedly over, as can be traced in the works of Isaac Newton and Francis Bacon. A history of the role that the occult has played in the formation of modern science and medicine, The Rosicrucian Enlightenment has had a tremendous impact on our understanding of the western esoteric tradition. Beautifully illustrated, it remains one of those rare works of scholarship which the general reader simply cannot afford to ignore. eBook available with sample pages: 0203166019
Placing Bruno--both advanced philosopher and magician burned at the
stake--in the Hermetic tradition, Yates's acclaimed study gives an
overview not only of Renaissance humanism but of its interplay--and
conflict--with magic and occult practices.
"Among those who have explored the intellectual world of the
sixteenth century no one in England can rival Miss Yates. Wherever
she looks, she illuminates. Now she has looked on Bruno. This
brilliant book takes time to digest, but it is an intellectual
adventure to read it. Historians of ideas, of religion, and of
science will study it. Some of them, after reading it, will have to
think again. . . . For Miss Yates has put Bruno, for the first
time, in his tradition, and has shown what that tradition
was."--Hugh Trevor-Roper, "New Statesman"
"A decisive contribution to the understanding of Giordano Bruno,
this book will probably remove a great number of misrepresentations
that still plague the tormented figure of the Nolan
prophet."--Giorgio de Santillana, "American Historical Review"
"Yates's book is an important addition to our knowledge of Giordano
Bruno. But it is even more important, I think, as a step toward
understanding the unity of the sixteenth century."--J. Bronowski,
"New York Review of Books"
